The Importance of Taking Time for Yourself

You should never underestimate the importance of “ME” time. You’re going to be spending the majority of your time with your significant other. Because we end up spending so much time with our partner we can fall into the trap of taking them for granted.

I love Katie with all my heart, but she can’t give me the male bonding and dumb joy my friends can provide. I love my friends like brothers from another mother, but they can’t provide that deep emotional sexual connection my loving wife can.

We’re big believers in using our time apart to enhance our time together. Since the very early days of our relationship we have established our own personal time guidelines. Making these guidelines very clear helped ensure that neither partner was feeling left out or neglected from certain activities.

Use These Tips to Take Some Time for Yourself

Declare a Personal Night – PIck a night of the week as your night. This night of the week defaults to Ladies / Man night with our friends. We chose Friday nights because it’s a good night for friends being available and there usually isn’t some family function to compete with. Slowly all of our friends jumped on the same bandwagon and it became very easy to plan going out for drinks or playing some poker.

Have Some Personal Activities or Hobbies – I like to go on long bike rides, or put on some headphones and get lost in a video game. Katie will bake up a storm in the kitchen or do some peaceful sudoku in bed. You don’t necessarily have to actually be separate from each other to enjoy time apart, you just need to respect each others space.

Family Time is Personal Time for Both Partners – We all have various family functions we need to attend. Or sometimes it’s just nice to go hang out with your parents or siblings. Let’s be honest, sometimes going to the in laws can feel like a chore. Enjoy the time with your family and let your partner enjoy their time alone.

A Weekend Getaway – Plan yourselves a weekend golf trip with the boys, or a visit to the spa for a massage and facial with your girlfriends. A few days apart is a great little boost to your relationship.

Make the Most of Your Time Home Alone – If your partner is out with some friends, or on a business trip, make the most of your time home alone. Have a cocktail, make yourself your favorite dish for dinner, and watch a movie on Netflix that you know your partner would never agree to watch with you. Stretch out in bed and enjoy all the room you have to yourself. Tonight you’re the King or Queen of the castle, make the most of it!

Build Sexual Tension While You’re Apart –  We’ve used this example several times before. If you’re going to spend several hours, or days, apart from each other then use that time to send each other some sexy text messages or pictures. Build the sexual energy so when you do finally come home you can’t wait to jump into each others arms.

The time we spend apart makes the time together all the more precious. Make the most of both and your relationship will get stronger and more meaningful every week.
