Lisa & Haydn
Ages: 26 and 28
Status: Together 6 years and now Engaged
How did you meet?: We met in University at a local bar. He approached me and I instantly recognized him from high school but we never knew each other then. When we went back to our home town for break, we realized we lived 3 blocks away from each other! Small world 🙂
When did you realize you were in love?: After dating for a while, Haydn told me he loved me one night while we were falling asleep. I instantly said it back because I felt the same. I knew I loved him because he is an amazing person and my best friend. It just works.
What qualities in each other make you a good match?: We both love to travel and experience new things. We also value family and friends. We have an open and honest relationship from day 1. Honesty is key! We are also opposites in ways which make us work so well. I am a planner and the thinker while he levels me out with his easy going and positive attitude.
What is your perfect date night?: Our perfect date night involves food (probably Asian food) because we are big foodies. Then a walk or bottle of wine and a movie on the couch is good with us.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced as a couple and how did you get through it?: When we moved to South Korea in 2012 to teach English this was a huge step. It was the first time we had traveled together, lived together and worked together. It was a lot to experience at once. We had our ups and downs while adjusting to our new life together. We got through this by openly communicating our feelings and working through challenges whether it was me complaining that I was doing all the work at school or him complaining I was being messy. Communication really got us through it! We always say that living and working together in Korea was a test of our relationship and we came out on top!
What is one thing you would like to improve about your relationship?: Because our lives are really focused on budgeting and money at the moment, we forget to spend time (and a little money) on us. Romance and keeping the spark alive while on the road is tricky and we really should make more of an effort to do so.
What advice would you go back and give yourselves when you just started dating?: We would tell ourselves that in a few years we would fall in love with travel. Spend less money at the bars and save more money for seeing the world!
